The Trueways 2 Day Basic Survival Course

The 2 Day Basic Survival Course has been designed for people wishing to get a real taste of the survival experience in a relatively short period of time including spending the night in a shelter you have built with a fire you have made for outdoor cooking and warmth. This is all done using the natural resources found around you.

Training is based upon a very old, widely used, tried and tested methodology and set of principles. The approach we use has ensured the safety and survival of literally thousands of people the world over and has been the basis of numerous best selling books, with our own Lofty Wiseman's book selling almost 2 million copies in over 18 languages.

We teach in a practical, hands-on manner ensuring that everyone masters the skills we teach enough to be able to use them on their own.

All of the basics are covered, including;

Survival psychology and the 'Will to Live'
Your Survival Tin (We give you one)
Shelter building (natural and improvised)
Fire starting and maintenance (without matches, wet and dry)
Reflectors for heat and protection
Site / Camp location and selection
Signalling for rescue
Finding Water and making it safe to use
Natural Food (Flora, Fauna, Fungi, insects, invertebrates etc)
Wild Fishing (limited locations only)
Plants for Medicine
Navigation without aid (sun, star & terrain based)
Improvised map making
Medical (being your own doctor in the wilds)

This course is great fun with enough reality to provide just the right amount of challenge and reward for any individual or group. All participants are provided with a Trueways Standard Issue Survival Tin such as those sold on our shop.Is This Course For a Gift! Had a great course last week. Have finally got the wood smoke out of my clothes and already loathe the suited and booted feeling I get at work. Learn't so much and was so pleased that I actually managed to start my own fire using a fire strike. Can't wait to get out to the wilds again. Many thanks to Chris for his patience and all the things he taught us.

Hi Steve

I just wanted to say thanks for your input over the weekend, the course was a great taster for me and I am sure that Keith and I will be back for more.

I would be really keen to live off the land a bit more, so if you can recommend a good time of year and venue, please drop me a line and perhaps we could book up.

You have a great way of communicating your knowledge, in a very detailed but easy to grasp way. The course was well paced and informative, it allowed me to have a better understanding of how to fend for myself. I did feel very pleased with myself after getting my own fire going, even though I had to borrow your flint. Fire is now my friend too! I will invest in a decent flint of my own.

I had to show my girls how easy it was to get a fire started, so as soon as I got back I dragged them out onto the patio. I did opt for the cotton wool option but my girls where impressed!

I hope we left enough wood for the next course!

Ive just got back from this course and had a really good time. Both instructors were excellent and were friendly, proffesional and approachable at all times (thanks Steve and Chris for all your help).

I can honestly say that in my 20 years of camping I have not spent a night so being so comfortable or warm (the down sleeping bag and the yew branch mattress helped a lot I think). What a great way to spend easter weekend. I would reccomend this course to anyone - I was a total beginner and had a great time. In fact I'm currently trying to organise a second weekend with my friends and brother as it was so good.

Dear Glyn, Chris and Jordan,

Ethan and I just wanted to say how much we enjoyed the young survivalist course at Cannock Wood. Having never even been camping it was a challenge but we are hooked and loved every second of it. It gave us both a real sense of achievement and self belief along with a few bruises. We have learnt loads and will be practising (especially starting a fire after it took so long!) in preparation of our next course (hopefully a 3 day course) which we are both desperate to do.
Chris – We are in awe at what you know about surviving on the land and found you really entertaining, calm, easy to talk to and learn from. Glyn – We liked your sense of humour and your mate. Most of all you made us feel welcome, taught us loads and kept giving us food! Jordan – Ethan adored and looked up to you and always wanted you to show him what to do. You were encouraging and helpful and made us believe we could do it.
No doubt Ethan will b e telling all his mates about his fantastic experience and I would certainly recommend it to anyone who has a child interested in the outdoors.

Thanks heaps and hope to see you guys again.

I had a fantastic time doing the two day course in Gloucester last week. Even though the air temperature was around minus 6 deg C, I was surprised at how well everyone coped, and at myself for enduring the cold. The main areas covered was Protection and Acquisition, although Chris (the instructor) did his best to cover the other subjects.

I experienced a real sense of achievement when I managed to get my fire lit and burning well on the third attempt using flint and steel! The morale boost from having a fire burning so quickly made me enjoy the course even more.

I strongly recommend this course to anyone, and if you can cope during the deepest depths of a very cold winter, then anything else nature throws at you will be a 'walk in the park'

This has to be one of the best weekends I've ever had. We got soaked in a massive downpour, smoked out of out shelter because of our fire, got little sleep because we built our shelter too small, and to top it all off, didn't even manage a cup of tea the morning after because of a combination of wet wood, 3 hours of irritation, and a small mistake with a pot of water...

That may sound like a nightmare, but it was tremendous fun. Getting your own fire started is a brilliant feeling, as is sleeping in a shelter that you've personally put together. A massive thanks to Jordan and Toby who were always on hand with advice and generally made the course as enjoyable as it could be. The sense of achievement you get out of this can't be summed up in a few words. Quite simply, try it out, and be prepared to have a weekend of brilliance!

Already thinking of the next course!

Thank you for a fantastic 2 days (Cumbria Site 3 - Nov 09).

In a week that unfortunately witnessed the regions worst flooding on record, it brings home the reality that you never know when the skills acquired via True Ways may be of value.

I highly recommend the course. Conrad and John’s knowledge and experience is delivered at a pace and level that can be absorbed by all. Importantly they both have a great sense of humor (John even looks like ‘Paul’ from the Chuckle Brother’s – I suspect that Conrad and John play ‘from me to you’ with a piece of firewood frequently).

I will definitely be bringing my four children on a course when they are of age. I truly believe that having at least an insight into basic survival skills is worth its weight in gold.

I hope to find the time next year to attend a 7 day course (I had better start practicing now).
