Does anyone have a freedom shelter to trade or sell. I have loads of stuff to trade or cash if the price is right. i am going to try to reproduce it in gortex.

I can probably send you one of the copies to play with. failing that raid the emergency kits next year as they put them in US chopper survival kits Big Grin

you might also find someone who can source one for you. I got mine of ebay.com as they do turn up. a few online sellers as well but not cheap. try either freedom shelter or ecotat.

I've got the 4 season version of the doss bag which is pretty good as well.

have you thought of making a goretexed german sniper bag?

before your time then as they've changed em now. pre goretex as well so 70's technology good bag though, first type was a quilted bag with a rubberised cover but sweaty so they made a detachable version which was easier to wash and look after but the outer was prone to the coating coming away from the fabric.

not the prettiest of things to wear but you could undo the knee zips and stick your webbing over the top before charging off like the fearless warriors we were.

in the recce platoons I worked with most of the drivers had them.

mines in the loft and comes out in summer

.I just picked up 2 more.I think they're great little shelters and I think they are all Goretex.As Dave said the German Sniper bags are nice summer bags and cant be beat for the cool morning brew up!Brew in the bag Big Grin

they arent goretex but thats not such a bad thing as it means they should last longer in the long run. the cheap versions I've had problems with the seam taping.
for 30 quid though I couldnt really complain.

have you got the hang of wearing them yet?

where are you picking them up from?

Hey Dave,
now that you mention it there's not one goretex logo on the three ecotat shelters, which is the norm for any and all gore products.they put that logo everywhere.theres no paperwork with these so I am curious of what they are made of.all three are the "experimental# 3" and as far as wearing like a poncho it is kinda awkward especially without webbing to hold it to your body.The one time I tried ,I had to use 550 as a belt.
Now the German bag is very nice.the bag on the back had a WP coating that completly peeled away but the bag can still hold's the foot and leg section well.Ive only used that bag a couple trips but it also makes for a great T-Rex impression around the fire circle if you drag the leg part like a tail behind Big Grin

you can download a pdf of the ecotat manual. the belt thing is a bit wierd as you are supposed to use the hooked end of the shock cord down one of the sleeves. its the way you part zip it up, step in, stick head through hole for a long coat, pull the bottom up to your middle to make a short coat.

its a very clever well thought out design reminiscent of ww2 for innovation.

as to being noisy its quieter than a 58 poncho and should wear in but for the helicopter sere kits I reckon they're ideal. I taped up the zipper pulls which rattled a lot then it worked a lot better.
